Hello Mahogany Families,

“We are hardwired to connect. What those connections look like look, sound, and feel like is up to each of us. On any given day we navigate relationships with a multitude of people, including ourselves. Those are a lot of different humans that we have the potential to have an impact on and who can have an impact on us. How can we strengthen those connections?” (Adapted from Lawson, etal.)

Wishing you connection, and community. Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Take care,

❤️

Tracy and Christine

Student Safety

There have been several concerning reports shared in this and surrounding communities regarding an individual who is approaching and/or filming people with a phone. We are also aware that there was a filming incident that occurred while students were leaving the school one day after choir rehearsal. We take student safety very seriously and have been connecting with impacted families. I have also been in contact with our neighboring schools. We have also added some additional supervision before, during and after school for student safety. There is always room for learning, and this feels like an opportune time to remind our students (your children) about some general safety tips. Below are some ideas and safety strategies you can review with your children that were created in coordination with our communications.

1. Walk with a friend or travel to and from school in a group.

2. Tell your parents or a teacher if you see anything that makes you feel unsafe.

3. Don’t talk to strangers and stay at arm’s reach or more away from strangers.

4. Do not go anywhere with anyone you do not know (in a car or on foot).

5. If someone you don’t know approaches you, run the other way even if the person claims to know you or your parents.

6. If a stranger makes an attempt to grab you, pull away and yell “help, this is not my parent”. Move quickly away from the person.

If students or parents witness any suspicious person(s) at any time, please contact police by calling 911. Calgary Police Service (CPS) is the correct connection for any suspicious behaviors. We also work alongside CPS as issues and concerns arise.

Phys Ed Wellness Updates

"Wheel Week" is May 13 - 16.  We will kick it off with a wheel parade on May 13.

We will meet at the wetlands Amphitheater (see attached map for Amphitheater location) at 7:30am and ride our wheels over to the school.

Wheel Week is a week where students are encouraged to ride their bikes, scooters, or any wheeled devices to school for an entire week.  This event promotes physical activity and fosters a sense of community while being environmentally conscious.  By reducing the car traffic around the school, it contributes to safer streets and cleaner air.  Wheel Week encourages students to showcase their unique wheels and personalized rides.  This initiative aims to instill healthy habits, promote active transportation and create memorable experiences for everyone involved.

Students are to have a lock for their rides, wear helmets and any other safety get up.  in case we run out of bike rack spaces; students can lock their bikes to the fence.  No bikes should be left unlocked.

Digital Device Policy

We have a growing number of students who are bringing cellphones and smart watches to school. We have a no device bell to bell, “Away for the Day” policy for all students and we need your help. We understand that some families may choose to provide their child (ren) with a cell phone or smart watch to ensure safe travel too and from school each day.

Our school policy supports this. All smart watches and cell phones must be stored in silent/off mode in a child’s backpack during the school day. Students are also welcome to bring their devices to the office for safekeeping. Students are not permitted to wear smart watches in class. These devices have become a distraction to student learning and safety while in school as students may be sending and/or receiving text messages throughout the day. We really need your help in reviewing this with your child. This policy is in place for students' well-being. Please note that you always have access to connect with your child. We ask that you please call the office, and we will ensure that communication is shared or that your child can come speak with you as needed. We are also available to relay messages as needed (ie: change in pick up plan at the end of the day). 403-817-3448.
