Hello Mahogany Families,
Well, we are definitely in June...the days have been hot, the students are excited, and the lessons are getting harder and harder to teach with the enticement of summer and vacation days on the horizon. June brings with it so much anticipation of wrapping things up, celebration and the excitement of planning ahead for next year. We also know that this can find us with relationship challenges with competition in games, and relationships wearing thin some days.
We have been seeing such an increase in students becoming dysregulated and using unkind words with each other, and swearing and racialized language has become a common occurrence among many of our students during unstructured times (recess, lunch, transitions in hallways). This language includes the use of derogatory statements, put downs, swearing, racial slurs and a resurgence of students using the middle finger towards each other and with staff. These actions have also led to some physical altercations between students as well. This year, as a part of our wellbeing goal, we have been working on creating a sense of belonging through kindness and empathy. While we often see an increase in student behaviors in June as we head toward change and the summer break, it seems to be a growing concern more so than in the past. When problem solving these incidents, we often talk to students about their actions and use these incidents as teachable moments to help students understand the impact that their actions can have. Kindness is key as well as connecting through empathy. When we know how we have made someone feel, while we cannot undo it, we can move forward differently. These are important lessons for us all to be aware of and learn from. Once we know better, we do better.
This week, my “Principal of the Day” devised a great challenge for all students; simply to smile at one another. He asked them to smile at a certain number of students each day and make it a challenge to increase the number of people you smile at each day. Simple, kind, and effective. We will continue to encourage students to build positive relationships, connect, and solve problems when needed. Perhaps, this week, a little smile may go a long way.
