March! Remember how long January seemed and now we are rolling into March already!

March brings the renewed hope of Spring. An opportunity for warmer weather, buds and leaves beginning to sprout and the first flowers of the season. I am always amazed at how quickly things can change with the warmth of the sun and the longer hours of sunlight each day brings. Today, I filled my bird feeder and almost immediately, it was filled with multiple types of birds flitting about. The sun is shining and that truly makes the day a success – happiness, a feeling of lightness and anticipation of longer days, and sunshine help us to think forward to all that spring can bring. Staffing Updates

Modular Classroom Update

• Mahogany School is receiving 4 Modular classrooms
• Construction begins on Monday, March 3, 2025
• Modulars will be attached to the school on the Northwest corner closest to the houses beside the school and additional entry/exit ways to school and modulars will be built
• The classrooms will be attached to the school with a ramp and doorways
• Construction will require mitigation of some of our play area on the tarmac as well as our basketball nets will be re-positioned and re-painted once construction is completed
• Fencing will surround the construction area for safety (Starting March 3, 2025)
• Grade 1 entry and exit will be impacted – please use the entry/exit on the northwest side of the school
• The majority of the construction will be completed outside of school hours; however, some work may occur during the school day.
• The contractors have been made aware of school hours, events and Before and After School care routines
• Modulars are to be completed and available for the start of the 2025-2026 school year
• As with any construction projects there may be delays
• We have created contingency planning in the case of any delays

• We expect preparation work to begin the week of March 3 for the installation of four modular classroom units at Mahogany School.
• Construction will take place at and around the northwest corner of the school. Families can expect to see crews and machinery on-site as work begins to prepare the schoolyard with the modulars, expected to be delivered in late spring.
• To prioritize safety and minimize disruptions to learning, the work area will be enclosed with fencing, and construction will follow a set schedule. Crews will also take steps to ensure regular school activities, such as physical education classes, outdoor activities and student drop-off and pickup, continue as smoothly as possible.
• Construction is expected to continue through the warmer months, with landscaping completed before the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
• Students are expected to begin learning in the modulars in September.
• These modular classrooms will provide the additional space we need to support the needs of our learning community. We appreciate your patience as construction gets underway.

Enrollment for 2025-2026

• Mahogany School remains in ‘Closed’ status for the 2025-2026 school year.
• Only students currently living in Mahogany can be enrolled at Mahogany School
• Registrations that are unable to be accommodated at Mahogany School are transferred to our Overflow School, Bayside School, and placed on a callback list
• Kindergarten lottery is complete, and families have until March 16 to declare their acceptance of placement. Any spaces not filled due to families declining placement will be filled as per our callback processes and is ongoing until September 30, 2025.
• AM / PM Kindergarten classroom placement notification will be in April
• Grades 1-5 registration for 2025-2026
• All students currently registered are automatically moved forward and enrolled in next year’s grade – there is no action for families to take
• New registrations are currently being reviewed. We continue to follow our callback processes for all grades as spaces become available
• Any students not receiving placement at Mahogany will be transferred to our overflow school, Bayside School, and placed on the callback list and contacted as spaces become available
• Additional information regarding classroom configuration and classroom placement will be sent via school messenger in April

Wonka Musical Practices

Tuesday and Thursday = Choir 11:50am – 12:10pm

Wednesdays

• Actor practice 2:30 – 3:15pm
• Set Design 2:30 – 3:15pm

Swimming

We are going swimming and looking for volunteers, specifically Male volunteers.  Volunteers are not required to swim.  Your main responsibilities will be going on the buses with students, helping students in the change rooms, and supervising students from the swim deck.

Thank you to everyone that has volunteered for swimming so far.  As of now we are short on male volunteers. We need 6 – 8 male volunteers a day. If we do not get more male volunteers, we will be unable to go swimming. If you do not have security clearance, you can start that process now and it should be done in time for swimming. Please contact our secretary Michelle Haylow at mahaylow@cbe.ab.ca for further information regarding your security clearance.

Until further notice all School Council Meetings will be held online due to the CUPE Local 40 Strike
