Hello Mahogany Families

What a busy week once again with swimming, field trips galore and all of the amazing work that we see each and every day. This week we welcomed educational delegates from Germany. The delegation spent the week working with Calgary Board of Education leaders, and schools to understand how we use data to inform our practices. We were honoured to have the opportunity to share how we use multiple forms of data (provincial, system, and in school) to create a wide body of evidence to support our students to improve academic achievement. We had a great discussion about how we work at CBE as well as what that looks like on a broad planning scope and a day-to-day snapshot at Mahogany School. Delegates asked many questions and toured the school to observe classroom settings as well as look at student work samples. The overwhelming response from out visitors was awe at the depth of work our students are engaging in and the data we use as well as gather to inform our work each day. We invited them in to be a part of our ‘extended’ circle at Mahogany by sharing our anchor text, “The Circles All Around Us”, with them and they shared back that they could see clear evidence of our writing work and wellbeing connections throughout our classrooms and hallways. They were so appreciative of having the change to see what the work looks like from data to desktops, and we found a lot of value in the conversations as leaders we were able to have with these educators. The work our school is engaging in with our writing has been an exceptional way to see growth in our student academic progress as well as identifying areas for targeted supports and intervention, allowing us to organize our staff to best support students. We are so proud of this work and know that it is having a huge impact for all of us in our learning journey. We are always happy to share our Mahogany Story!

Inspiration

Spring! The trees have popped with flowers; the grass is green, and the birds are nesting-the days are longer, and the skies seem bluer. The long weekend is upon us and offers us time to relax and reconnect.”

Weekly Wonder

How will you relax and reconnect this long weekend?

Updates and Administrivia

Read-A-Thon

Read-a-Thon ends on Thursday; any minutes read on Thursday count. This is our last week to collect reading minutes and pledges! We are looking forward to tracking everyone’s progress and all of the funds that come with it. E-transfers can be sent at any time; we are collecting all cash donations on Friday to be counted and tallied. Reading prizes will be awarded for the most minutes raised and for most money raised! We know how excited all the children are about reading and love hearing them share their times each day – 100% of all funds raised will be going towards supporting student learning resources and experiences. We can’t wait to see how much we have raised and what we can bring to our students – thank you to everyone who has been collecting pledges!

Playground

With all of the rain this week we are still waiting for the playground area to be open. The crew is waiting for the ground to dry up a bit and then they will be flattening the grass for safety – hopefully we will have access early next week. There will be some fencing changes and access to the playground as soon as Monday.

Volunteers

A huge thank you to the many volunteers who supported classes in YMCA swimming, Calgary Philharmonic, Granary Road and classroom supports. We appreciate all of you and the help that you give each day!

School Council / Parent Society

Our next School Council Meeting will be on June 3 at 6:00pm followed by our next Fundraising Association Meeting which will follow, all parents/guardians are welcome to join! MLA Matt Jones is anticipated to be attending this meeting. We would love to have a teacher rep!
