Mahogany Messenger Oct. 9-13 | Gratitude, Secret Path Week, Playground, Winter Concert

Hello Mahogany Families,

As we head into this Thanksgiving weekend, we want you all to know that we are grateful for you. Each of you takes time to pour yourself into this incredibly important work and you have students at the core of what you do. Listening to Jody Carrington’s new podcast this morning I was reminded of my own ever developing quest of “Story”, what is your story, why does it matter and how can our stories help us help ourselves and others to be the best humans we can be. Everyone comes from somewhere, our stories make us who we are and good, bad, or devastating, those stories have space in how we enter each and every day with each other. Using this lens of gratitude, how are you entering this weekend? What things are you able to celebrate for yourself? We wish you a rest-filled weekend of family, friends, or simply some time to be with yourself and reflect on the good in your world. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who celebrate and happiness and grateful moments for you all.

Connection Corner

  • Thank you to all of our teachers! It was an honor to celebrate World Teacher’s Day with everyone. We are all teachers of children in some way each and every day and this is the MOST important job on this planet! We are honored to be able to share each day with you all.
  • Thank you to our amazing School Council and Fundraising Association for making us feel seen and bringing us delicious treats of coffee and doughnuts yesterday – the door-to-door service was an amazing touch!
  • Thank you to Mrs. Theberge and Mrs. Bourgeois for organizing an incredible Terry Fox run
  • Thank you to all of our families who came out to run and cheer on our students as they ran for Terry and for an end to Cancer! Thank you too for your understanding as we wrapped up our run with an unforeseen fire drill – the students did such an incredible job today!
  • Thank you for all the donations – our Toonies for Terry was a great success! We have raised over $1500.00 for cancer research.
  • Thank you to all the volunteers who came out for our very first Fun Lunch! Your help and support is much appreciated

Updates and Administrivia

Secret Path Week October 17-22

As a Mahogany school community, we continue to embed Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing, and knowing as part our ReconciliACTIONs. Our understanding builds as we interact and learn from the land, reflect and share, hear and speak stories, celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ contributions and deepen our connections. Our acknowledgement spans far beyond truth and reconciliation week and orange shirt day.

As a proud Downie Wenjack legacy school, we are committed to listening, learning and acting. Secret Path Week is a national movement which occurs annually from Oct 17-22. The week was inspired by Chanie Wenjack, a victim of the residential school system.  We will have an assembly on Monday, October 16 in the morning to help us start our work around the Walk for Wenjack. During this week, we will be constructing a large collaborative ReconciliACTION piece as a school as one small demonstration of our continued commitment.

We are asking that your child brings in a few small rocks that can fit in their hand to use as a foundation for this piece as we come together in Sprit, Heart, Body and Mind. Please send these small rocks to school with your child by Thursday, October 12.

Our teachings surrounding this will be solidified in our schools' guiding questions.

Where do I come from?
Where am I going?
Why am I here?
Who am I?
