Principal's Message

Oki, Danit'ada, Âba wathtec, Tânisi, Taanishi, Bonjour, Hello, and Labas Mahogany Families,

This week, I had the honor of sharing the work of Mahogany staff and students towards our Truth and Reconciliation Commitment.  I spoke about the work we have done to create a culture of caring, respect and belonging for ALL our students and how we are continuing this work forward into year two. When we talk about our work, we speak about our reconciliactions, these are the little things, and big things that we are committed to do to support our learning and understanding as both a staff and with our students at Mahogany School. With the incredible wetlands in our community, we have taken the opportunity to embrace ways of land-based learning. Classes have engaged in journalling, literacy activities, sit spots, scientific endeavors all in an effort to connect to their learning and engage in meaningful ways. Our stories bring us together. I am proud of the land-based learning we are engaging in and the connections to science and exploration, inquiry and questioning it uncovers. Curiosity is a powerful tool that allows us to build our capacity for intercultural understanding as we continue to establish a new school culture, we acknowledge the past and walk forward into the future together.

Inspiration

“Belonging is being your authentic self and knowing that no matter what happens, you belong to you.” - Brene Brown

What Does it mean to belong? Building a culture of belonging is a huge task. There are so many factors that play in creating a place where you feel connected. Whether it is the relationships you build with the people or the connections to place it is the feeling that you belong that keeps us feeling connected. This week as we recognize National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we take time to reflect on what belonging and connection means to different groups of people and we as a school commit to reconciliactions to support our own sense of understanding. We continue establishing community and connection through building capacity for inter-cultural understanding. Our Truth and Reconciliation action is grounded in the following questions: What stories do we have to tell? What stories does the land have to tell? How are we all connected?

Our TRC Call to Action #63- Building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect offered inspiration.
