Mahogany Messenger – September 14th
Dear Mahogany Families,
We have enjoyed getting to know students over the past two weeks. Teachers and school staff are working to create established routines, set expectations, and get to know your amazing kids as we start the school year. Mahogany School is an incredible place to learn, to belong, and to contribute. We want to sincerely thank all parents & guardians who joined us for our first School Council & MSFA meetings last week.
Provincial Screeners for Alberta Students – 2026-27 School Year
For the 2026-27 school year, all Kindergarten to Grade 5 students will be assessed using provincially mandated screeners that measure a learner's proficiency in different literacy and numeracy skills. CBE teachers administer assessments at different points throughout the year. This week, our Grades 1-5 teachers will begin administering the assessments and in January, Kindergarten teachers will begin.
The results of the screeners do not impact a student's report card. Rather, they help teachers plan targeted interventions inside the classroom and monitor growth over time. Results of the screeners will be shared with parents before the Parent Teacher Conferences on November 26th and 27th. The Conferences will serve as an opportunity to have a conversation with your child's teacher around their screener results, as well as their classroom learning and achievement of the curriculum outcomes taught this fall. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher. We are also happy to answer any questions you have.
Sincerely,
Jill Scarrow, Christine Hewitt & Leah Clare
September 24th 3:30 – 5:30 pm Meet the Teacher & MSFA Hosted BBQ
From 3:30 until 5:30, Mahogany School will host a "Meet the Teacher" evening. Parents, this is an opportunity to drop into your child's classroom, see their learning space, and say hello to his or her classroom teacher. Students must be accompanied by a parent to be inside the school.
Mahogany School Fundraising Association will be hosting a BBQ/Family Picnic outside the school from 3:00 – 6:00 pm that evening. Bring your picnic blankets and baskets to spend some time welcoming back our school community! Beef hot dogs, chips, and juice will be served. For people with any food preferences, allergies or intolerance, please bring your own food. There is no cost for the hotdogs, chips, or juice; however, donations for MSFA will be accepted. Students must be accompanied by a parent to join. There will be no adult or staff supervision provided and food will not be served to unsupervised children in the food line. Please have an adult accompany your child.
Please note – due to this event, for the afternoon of the 24th the 'Hug & Go' will be closed. Please plan accordingly.
September 25th - IPP Conferences
Parents – there is no school for students on September 25th due to a non-instructional day. Teachers will be reaching out to families to book conferences that day, if you have a student supported by an Individual Program Plan (IPP). This day is an opportunity to meet your child's teacher one-on-one and share parent perspective for the 2026-27 school year based on his or her individualized program planning. Thank you for being a partner in your child's learning.
Hug & Go Reminders
Thank you for using the Hug & Go area appropriately and helping us keep drop-off safe and efficient for everyone. Please remember that the Hug & Go is intended for a quick drop off only. It is not meant for parking or for walking students to the school doors. Keeping the line moving helps ensure that everyone can enter the school safely and on time.
We also want to remind everyone that, although it can be difficult to see, there is a crosswalk within the Hug & Go area. Please avoid stopping at the crosswalk so that students can cross safely. We are hopeful that the painted crossing lines will be refreshed soon to make the crosswalk more visible. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and for doing your part to keep all of our students safe. We truly appreciate your help!
Mahogany School Fundraising Association Updates -
Casino Fundraising – Please Volunteer!
On October 14 & 15, we’ll be at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino raising money for our school, and this could be HUGE. Every shift we fill brings in about $2,000 for our school. Which means…40 shifts × ~$2,000 = potentially $80,000 for our kids. This isn't just fundraising for the sake of fundraising. This is money going directly back into our school and creating experiences, resources, and opportunities for our kids. No experience is needed. You’ll get training; it’s casual and fun, and food is provided! Volunteers can be grandparents, neighbors, aunts, uncles, or the person behind you in the grocery line. They do not need a school volunteer form or have a police record check. CLICK HERE to volunteer. Please email: mahoganyschoolfa@gmail.com with any inquiries.
